Experts recommend that you should study for the written firefighter exam every bit as seriously as you would study for final examinations in high school or college.

Fortunately, there are a number of books and study guides available that can help you prepare for the written firefighter exam.  For example, one good source for help with written examinations is the Don McNea Fire School.  Its website is www.fireprep.com.

Other excellent written firefighter examination preparation books include:

  • Firefighter Exam: The Complete Preparation Guide,  2nd Ed.
  • Reading Comprehension and Mathematics
  • ARCO Firefighter, 14th Ed.
  • The Complete Firefighter's Exam Preparation Book, 2nd Ed.
  • Barron's How To Prepare For Firefighter Examinations, 4th Ed.
  • Firefighters Entrance Handbook
  • The Encyclopedia of Firefighter Examinations
  • Firefighter Selection Inc. 8th Edition notebook
  • Firefighter Written Exam Study Guide
  • Firefighter Practice Written Exams

While you may be able to find one or more of these books at your local library, it is more likely that you will have to order them off the Internet.  However there is another possible source and that is your local community college.  Some of these schools offer courses related to firefighting.  If this is the case, they may have one or more of these books in their bookstore or would, at least, be able to order them for you.

I found several of these books at Amazon.com.  they were available as used copies and were very inexpensive.  For example, we were able to obtain the Barron’s book on firefighter exams for less than five dollars plus shipping.
